Mike Margarson trained in London, Innsbruck, Oxford, Munich and Sydney and is currently Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, St Richard's Hospital, Chichester. He was ICU clinical lead at St Richard’s for 10 years and FICM tutor until August 2021. From 2013 to 2019 he served two terms as Chair of the Wessex Intensive Care Society.

So now to this.. ICU has always been a great leveller, but over the last 18 months we have at times all felt utterly powerless to change the course of patients with COVID, and then its been soul-destroying. We’ve seen nursing and medical colleagues in tears on numerous occasions as patients, some their own age, have succumbed. None of us have been un-affected.

Medics especially, but nurses too, seem reluctant to reach out for help. Burnout is all too common and for some, the start of a slippery slope.  The initiative that Gary and the ICS have started deserves to be massively successful, and I’m proud to be involved.

The hashtag #dontcrackunderpressure seems apt at several levels, but in the real world we all need help - we’re all in this together. Hope our fundraising can do it justice.
