Hi, I’m Gary – I get all of the blame for coming up with the idea for this challenge. Those of you who know me, know that I like a challenge, having had my own logistics business for the last 30 years, so why not cross the alps in freezing temperatures in winter at 58 years of age! However, the inspiration for bringing together a team to take this on, is our daughter Harriet.
March 2020 is a date that will stay with us all for the rest of our lives, I’m sure. But for us, as I know for so many parents, it’s when we realised that Harriet, a junior doctor, was going in to the eye of the Covid storm, when she joined the ICU team at the Royal Free Hospital.
It soon became evident that the mental, as well as physical pressure of the pandemic, was immense. Day after day dealing the sickest of patients, the challenge of relentless hours in full PPE and then at the end of each day, the tragic loss of so many lives.
We chose to support the Intensive Care Society and Doctors in Distress charities for very obvious reasons. They endeavour to support our healthcare workers and raise awareness and much needed funding, to support the mental welfare of our frontline healthcare workers. We hope that you’ll be able to support us.
