The Society's Research Committee is responsible for the promotion of the research aspirations of the Society.
The Committee's intention is that the Society's grants are targeted primarily at pump-priming research that will particularly encourage young research workers.
To emphasise this we offer 5 or 6 annual grants in the form of the Young Investigator Award. The Society hopes that these 'young' researchers will make increasing contributions to its future scientific meetings. In addition, the Society offers funding, under the Travelling Fellowship Award, towards the cost of travel and subsistence for those who wish to travel to an institution other than their own, either within the UK, or overseas. This is specifically aimed at those who will gain skills or experience of particular benefit to the UK intensive care community in the future. The Committee is also keen to support undergraduate medical students with an annual prize for the best essay submitted. For queries relating to grants and prizes please contact gemma@ics.ac.uk
The Society is proud to announce the Joint Directors of Research are Dr Gavin Perkins and Dr Danny McAuley.
The Society has been involved in the creation of and initial funding of The Intensive Care Foundation. The Foundation aims to promote intensive care research in the UK and coordinate multicentre trials. There is now considerable expertise in this area and there are now several projects underway, including TracMan, BALTI II, SimSept and PERMIT. If you are interested in getting involved in multicentre research trials or have ideas for future pilots or large scale studies then please contact the Trials Coordinator, Leslie Morgan [lesley.morgan@nda.ox.ac.uk].
The Society will hold regular research priority reviews and it is likely that these will take place in future at the annual meetings.
