Patient Flows Working Group

Introduction

The Patient Flows Working Group is a combined effort between the Intensive Care Society and the Department of Health. The objective was to refine the Modernisation Agency’s Patient Flows Model and to develop other models to assist with capacity and flow planning. The first stages of this work have now been completed and it is suggested that the Flows Model (see below) is used over a two to four week period coinciding with the biannual KH03a Critical Care Bed Census.

Work So Far

A broad outline of the group’s work has been described in an article published in the Health Services Journal. The Patient Flows Model is available to download. Supporting documentation and instructions are included. There is a literature review of capacity and flow modelling through critical care. The abstracts are available.

Future

The work is continuing and the Working Group aim to refine models used for strategic planning of critical care capacity (scenario planning), to improve prediction over the short term (four weeks) so allowing ICUs to modify their workload in relation to the available capacity. Eventually, the website will have a Patient Flows User Group.
