ICS Survey Policy
The Following surveys have been reviewed by the Society's Executive Committee and Chair of the Research Committee and we encourage member participation. Due to the high demand for the Society to assist with the distribution of surveys, before submitting a survey to the ICS, please see our policy and guidelines on the consideration and approval of surveys.
Current Open Surveys
1. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) ICU Use Survey
Currently there are no trials that have been done to show efficacy or harm. There is divided opinion on the subject among intensivists the world over. This survey is to find out from consultant ICS members what their practice is regarding use of NRT.

2. Toxic smoke inhalation: personal views of Clinicians
There still is a controversy in the UK About the role of cyanide poisoning in smoke inhalation victims. As available diagnostic tests are slow, and available antidotes in the UK are very toxic, it appears that the prevailing attitude is to ignore the possibility of cyanide toxicity.
Recent research has however shown that cyanide exposure should be suspected in those exposed to fires in confined spaces. Cyanide can act independently of, and perhaps synergistically with, carbon monoxide to cause morbidity and mortality.
We are trying to collect opinions from our colleagues in A&E, ICU, Hyperbaric units and Coroners to judge the level of awareness, the approach to investigation and treatment of patients admitted to units after inhaling smoke in fires arising in confined spaces. (The survey is also presented to the other disciplines)
