The ICS Education and Training Committee was established recently to support the lead given by the Royal Colleges and Intercollegiate Board in their aims of improving intensive care education and training in the United Kingdom. Consequently, it is prepared to offer advice regarding the delivery of education and training in ICM, whilst offering practical assistance in defining and modifying the curriculum for training in Intensive Care Medicine for all trainees. It is also hoped that the committee may influence the development and implementation of methods for the delivery of training in ICM which are relevant, valid and incorporate a multi-disciplinary/multi-professional approach. Such techniques should include the use of recent trends in adult learning and the use of instructional material (e.g. computer assisted learning, distance learning packages). Within the coming years, the Society hopes that the Committee will also develop courses for those training in ICM, and refresher/update courses for staff who have completed training.
