ICS Seminar - Update in Trauma Care
Meeting Summary
Wednesday 24 March 2010
Churchill House, London
This seminar brought together leading specialists from both civilian and military practice to discuss trauma systems and new concepts in the management of the trauma patient.
The initial lecture set the scene and emphasised the need for an integrated trauma system from the time of injury to rehabilitation. This was followed by an update on the management of spinal cord injury. Developments in non invasive monitoring and future technologies were also discussed. The classification of traumatic head injury were addressed looking at the uses and limitations of protocolised care. There was a series of interactive case discussions and the final lecture focused on lessons learned from military experience and how to apply to civilian practice. This covered the concept of damage control resuscitation.
This programme provided a better understanding of the role of all disciplines involved in acute trauma care. It highlighted the need for team work, early intervention and critical decision making so that the patient benefits from the optimum treatment at the right time.
