Meeting Summary
Tuesday 20 April 2010
Birmingham City Hospital, Birmingham
FEEL (UK) is a one day course intended to train practitioners in the use of trans-thoracic echocardiography (TTE) during the peri-resuscitation period. It has been adapted from the FEER course developed and run by Dr Raoul Breitkreutz (Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital, Frankfurt am Main) and thus has been well-validated.
The course format included attendance at a 50:50 mixture of didactic lectures, and small group hands on training (maximum 3 trainees/trainer). Thus, course size was limited to 30 candidates.
Programme
Aims of the course programme:
- Achieve standard TTE views – subcostal +/- IVC/ PLAX/ PSAX/ Ap4C
- Perform ALS-conformed echocardiography – synchronised with pulse checks thus limiting no-flow intervals
- Image interpretation : diagnosis + treatable causes of cardiac arrest/circulatory collapse
- myocardial insufficiency - pulmonary embolus(PE) v LVF
- pericardial collection(PC)
- hypovolaemia v myocardial infarction
- exclusion of VF
- Communicate findings to the resuscitation team
- Pitfalls and limitations
- Local implementation
