This one day course was aimed as a basic introduction to the use of chest ultrasound in the intensive care setting. The lecture content of the course covered the principles of ultrasound physics and machine optimisation, the technique of chest ultrasound, appearances of pleural & lung pathology, indications and technique of pleural aspiration / drainage.
The afternoon section focused on hands-on workshops scanning normal volunteers and ultrasound guided needle technique using phantoms. Pathology was reviewed in the form of small group teaching using pre-recorded examples.
